The Speaking Up Podcast

Dec 23, 2021

Early in my career, I was told by someone more senior that it’s better to be respected than liked. Personally, I have found the two can co-exist, though it’s important not to let your niceness get mistaken for being a pushover. And just because you’re friendly, you can still set clear boundaries for yourself AND make sure others respect them!

In this episode, I give you some useful pointers to keep in mind when setting your boundaries, such as:

  • Setting boundaries shows others how to treat you.
  • Be clear about what your limits are.
  • Setting boundaries doesn’t make you selfish.

Setting clear boundaries is good for your physical and mental health. Don't be afraid to assert these boundaries to others - it may not make you the most popular, but it will get you the respect you deserve.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

{1:18] The fine line between friendly and pushover

{3:16} Changing behavior is not an overnight fix

{6:15} Get over your fear of setting boundaries
